This 7-8 hour class is designed to familiarize students with carbine type weapons and teach the fundamental skills and mindset required to effectively use such weapons in a defensive situation. The class features both classroom and range portions. The classroom segment is a thorough overview of safety, carbine types, nomenclature, functions/malfunctions, marksmanship, optics/accessories/modifications, ammunition, gear selection/setup, and more. The range portion follows and includes engaging targets at various distances, rapid target acquisition drills, multiple target engagements, working with a sling, and more while the instructors focus on building solid fundamentals and good habits. Fundamentals are what this class is all about. Solid fundamentals are what make the difference when it counts.


This class is taught by Andy Hewitt, a veteran of the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment with multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and Matt Schneider, KY Department of Criminal Justice Training / NRA Certified firearms instructor.

What to Bring

At least one serviceable carbine type rifle (AR/M4 variants, AK variants, etc.) 500 rounds of ammunition. Weapon must be semiautomatic with detachable magazine. A two point sling is highly recommended. at least three good working magazines. Long pants and shoes you can stand for several hours in. This class will still be held in inclement weather, so prepare accordingly. Bring a water bottle, there will be a fill up station on the range. There is a Subway and a Mcdonald's nearby or you can pack a lunch or bring something to cook on our grill. When you arrive, please be sure the weapon and magazines you are going to use are unloaded.
